Smart Home Installation in San Francisco, CA

Smart home devices can make life easier in San Francisco, but older buildings and city living add complications. Victorian doors often have mortise locks that don't work with standard smart deadbolts. Thick plaster walls and multi-story layouts can weaken Wi-Fi signals. Many homes have wall heaters, gravity furnaces or radiators that aren't compatible with typical smart thermostats. In flats and condos, building entry systems, shared doors and HOA rules affect what can be installed where.

We install and set up smart locks, video doorbells, cameras, smart thermostats, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, smart switches and dimmers, and Wi-Fi mesh systems. That includes the wiring side — hardwired doorbells and their transformers, thermostat wiring and C-wire adapters, and switch boxes — handled by our licensed electricians where the job needs it. We check compatibility before installation, mount devices securely, connect them to your network and apps, and walk you through how they work. In condos we coordinate with the building manager before touching anything tied to shared entry or alarm systems.

What this covers

  • Smart lock installation
  • Video doorbell installation
  • Indoor and outdoor camera mounting
  • Smart thermostat compatibility check and installation
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installation
  • Smart switch and dimmer installation
  • Wi-Fi mesh setup
  • App setup and walkthrough
  • Hardwired doorbell and thermostat wiring
A note from around here: Victorian entry doors in the Haight and Western Addition, street-level front doors in the Sunset and Richmond, and condo units in SoMa and Mission Bay each present different challenges for smart locks, doorbells and cameras.

How a smart home installation visit usually goes

Check Compatibility

We review your doors, heating system, wiring and Wi-Fi coverage to confirm that devices will work before installation.

Install Devices

We mount locks, doorbells, cameras, thermostats and alarms securely, using the right hardware for wood, plaster or stucco.

Connect and Configure

Devices are connected to your network and apps, with settings, schedules and notifications configured to your preferences.

Test and Walk Through

We test each device, show you how to use it and make sure you're comfortable with the setup.

Safety devices are an important part of smart home installation. California requires smoke alarms in homes and carbon monoxide alarms in homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages, which describes a large share of San Francisco houses. Many older homes have alarms that are outdated or missing. We install interconnected or smart alarms, replace old battery-only alarms with hardwired interconnected units or long-life sealed models and test everything before we leave. For condo owners, we'll check with you about building systems so new devices don't interfere with shared alarm or entry systems. Package theft is another local reason people call. On blocks where deliveries sit on an exposed front stoop or at a garage door facing a busy street, a well-placed video doorbell or camera helps, but in San Francisco the placement takes thought: we aim cameras at your own entry and steps rather than across a neighbor's windows, mount them out of easy reach, and use wall plugs and sealants suited to stucco or wood siding so the fog doesn't get behind the mount. Exterior devices on the west side do better with weather-resistant housings and a periodic wipe of the salt film off the lens.

What shapes the price in San Francisco

Smart home installation cost depends on the number and type of devices, how compatible they are with your existing systems, and how much setup is involved. Smart locks on mortise doors, doorbells that need wiring work, and thermostats for older heating systems can take longer. Wi-Fi mesh systems in large or multi-story homes may require additional setup. Mounting on stucco or plaster takes more care than on wood. Installing several devices in one visit helps keep the overall cost down. Older doors that need to be shimmed, re-bored or fitted with a new strike for a smart lock add time, and so do doorbells mounted on stucco or masonry. Programming schedules, sharing access with family members or a dog walker, and linking devices into one app are part of the setup and worth doing properly the first time.

Neighbors often ask

Will a smart lock work on my Victorian door?

It depends on the existing lock. Many Victorian doors have mortise locks that aren't compatible with standard smart deadbolts. Some smart lock options are designed for mortise hardware, and in some cases a separate deadbolt can be added. We'll look at your door and explain the options before you buy.

Can you install a video doorbell at my flat?

Yes, if you have permission to install at the door. In multi-unit buildings, the street door may be shared, so we'll check with you about what the building allows. Where there's no doorbell wiring yet, we can run new low-voltage wire and a transformer so the doorbell never needs charging, or set up a rechargeable model if you'd rather skip the wiring.

Will a smart thermostat work with my heater?

Many San Francisco homes have wall heaters, gravity furnaces or radiators that aren't compatible with typical smart thermostats. We check your system before installation and recommend compatible options when they exist.

Can you improve Wi-Fi in my plaster-walled house?

Yes. Thick plaster and lath walls, multiple floors and long, narrow layouts can block Wi-Fi signals. A mesh system with nodes placed strategically can improve coverage. We'll help place nodes and set up the system for the best performance. In long railroad flats we usually put one node near the front and one toward the back, and in a Sunset house we often add one in the garage-level rooms so the in-law unit or home office gets a usable signal.

Can you connect my building's intercom to my phone?

Building intercoms and entry systems are usually managed by the building owner or HOA, and changes often require their approval and a specialized installer. We can install devices within your unit and help you understand options, but we won't modify shared building systems without approval.
